According to the Hindu Mythology, it is the cave chosen by Lord Mahadev for hiding from the demon Bhasmasur who was booned to be able to turn anyone into ashes by putting a hand in their head. Lord Mahadev hid in that cave for several years until Bhasmasur was gone. Lord Bishnu fooled Bhasmasur to put his hand in his head eventually turning him into ashes.
According to Buddhist mythology, Haleshi is the cave where Guru Rinpoche (the founder of Tibetan Buddhism) meditated. It is considered one of the most powerful meditation sites in Buddhist religion.
Every year thousands of devotees visit this temple from all around the world. The three caves in this temple are also symbolized as the three eyes of lord Shiva.
